DIY Halloween Curiosities: Scabs

Remember these?

From DIY Garland with Hedge Apples, Versatile Halloween Arrangement, An{other} Outdoor Halloween Arrangement, and the Hedge Apple Idea Gallery?  Well, here’s another use for this funky green fruit.  Scabs.  Yep, that’s right.  Scabs – for another addition to the Halloween curiosities collection {pug eyes, snake skeleton}.

Materials Needed:

  • Hedge Apples
  • Oven
  • Printer
  • Printer friendly paper with adhesive back (I used UPS shipping label {free!})
  • Small Bottle

How To:

1. If you have whole hedge apples, you need to slice them as thin as possible (this is much easier said than done).

2. Set oven on lowest setting.  Place slices in oven on foil lined sheet (to protect baking sheet), and pop into oven.  This will take several hours for them to dehydrate completely.  If you need, you can turn the oven up to 250 degrees after a while to help speed things up.

3.  While waiting, download label {above}, save, print, and send thanks to the Graphic Fairy for the image used {frame}. :)  Adhere to bottle.

4. When slices are good and brown, remove from oven and allow to cool.  Check to make sure they are hard and brittle (after slices have cooled).  If not, pop them back into the oven until they are.

5. On the skin of the dried hedge apple slices, you should still see their well defined ‘bumps.’  I have circled one area in the picture above, outlining some of the crevices defining the bumby skin.  Flake apart by removing one bump at a time.  Any remaining parts of slice can be crushed up.

 6. Place ‘scabs’ in bottle, and you’re done!  {Pretty gross, huh?}

Happy Haunting!
